EASES 2027 – 7th European Academic Symposium on EAF Steelmaking

18-20 May 2027 · Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna, Pisa, Italy

The 7th EASES symposium will be held in Pisa, hosted by the TeCIP Institute of Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna together with the Department of Industrial Furnaces and Heat Engineering at RWTH Aachen University. Abstracts are invited until 14 December 2026.

Call for Papers

EASES brings together researchers and doctoral candidates from universities, research and technology organisations, and companies working on EAF steelmaking. It gives them the opportunity to present and discuss their research projects, including work carried out in cooperation with companies in the sector, to make new contacts in the field, and to develop ideas and collaborations with people working on similar topics.

Contributions are welcome on:

  • Efficiency and optimisation
  • Process control, digitalisation and sensors
  • CO₂ emission reduction and environmental impact
  • Process modelling and simulation
  • Scrap treatment and control
  • Alternative and new charge materials (DRI/HBI/…)
  • Slag and by-product engineering, processing and valorisation
  • Production of new steel grades

Two submission options are available: presentation only, or presentation and full paper. All accepted full papers will be published in a Web of Science indexed conference series. To present at the symposium an abstract is required - in English, no more than 2500 characters.

    Latest Symposium Summary

The 6th edition of this symposium was held from June 11th to 13th, 2025, at the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. The symposium was organised by the Laboratory of Control Systems and Cybernetics at the University of Ljubljana together with the Department of Industrial Furnaces and Heat Engineering at RWTH Aachen University. It provided a platform for researchers, doctoral candidates, and industry professionals to present and discuss current developments in electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking.

A total of 27 presentations were given at the symposium, out of which 12 were accompanied also by a full paper published in IOP Science Journal of Physics: Conference Series (JPCS). Around 50 participants from academia and industry attended the symposium. The presentations covered topics such as modelling and simulation of EAF processes, the introduction of fossil‑free materials, CO₂ reduction strategies, and new approaches to EAF control.

    About the Symposium

The European Academic Symposium on EAF Steelmaking brings together researchers, doctoral candidates, and industry professionals working on EAF steelmaking. The symposium provides a platform to present and discuss current research, exchange ideas, and strengthen collaboration within the EAF research community.
Key topics include efficiency and optimisation, process control and sensors, CO₂ emission reduction, process modelling and simulation, scrap treatment, alternative charge materials and processes, slag and by‑product valorisation, and the production of new steel grades.
